Is sharing personal information on your biz blog bad for business?
Here’s my take:
We’re all human beings with feelings, families, and interests outside of our businesses and jobs right?
To be truly whole and fulfilled I believe we need to be well-rounded people; people with various interests and willing to share what drives and inspires us. Honestly I think that is when we perform our best...when we're comfortable being ourselves and not worried what others will think or say about us. It takes a leap of faith to share our true selves and come out from behind that curtain of who we think we should be. I, for one, have decided there will be no more hiding; no more pretending I have to be someone I’m not (I’m more comfortable in my yoga pants and a t-shirt than a suit, but that doesn’t mean I can’t fulfill my clients’ PR & editorial needs).
Isn't it better to be authentic, open and honest (with tact and professionalism of course) than to keep your personal life - which is often what inspires and motivates you to do what you do in your professional life - completely separate? Obviously, for some the issue is comfort level; where do I draw the line with what I'm sharing. Is what I am sharing relevant and still keeping my family safe from the wackos lurking around out there? I'm not saying to lay it all out there and wear your heart on your sleeve or share what you and the kids did last night for dinner (that's for our personal blogs), but to show people you are human and have a life outside of your business / job. I think it helps others understand you better as a human being if you're willing to open up a little and share what makes you tick.
