Lost Boy

CoreyHaim

This morning I pulled out my old leg warmers, hustled over to the CVS for a can of Aqua Net, and popped on a little "Frankie Say Relax", to honor yet another young life lost. This morning, it was confirmed by the LAPD, that childhood actor and 80's icon, Corey Haim was found dead in Los Angeles. One half of the famous "Coreys" is no more. And the world is a little darker for it.

Corey was an 80's heartthrob. Don't tell me that you didn't have his Tiger Beat pinup on your wall alongside Ralph Macchio, Rob Lowe, and C. Thomas Howell. You know that you did. And while it had been a while since Corey had wowed us with the likes of Lucas or Lost Boys, he had been fondly remembered by millions of teen girls now in their thirties, who, like me, grew up watching young Corey make his mark on the world.

Perhaps it is just a sign of the times that a young man of thirty-eight is taken away all too soon. Or perhaps it is the often seen curse of the childhood star to live fast and die young. Think River Phoenix, Dana Plato, or more recently, Heath Ledger or Brand Renfro. But, this is certainly nothing new. Think of James Dean or Marilyn Monroe, who too were taken away so very young. Is it simply a case of having too much of a good thing? Too much fame, too much money, and not enough self control? Whatever it is, it certainly casts a spotlight on your own mortality. Sure, I don't have scads of money to throw away on fast cars and all night parties, I don't have a drug problem, and it is very unlikely that I will be killed in a dark alley while trying to buy some crack from a hooker, but all of these people were my age or younger. At a time when we think we still have our whole lives ahead of us, and years to burn off the clock, it makes you stop a minute and say hmmmm.

So, wherever you are Corey, know that you will be missed. You brought some bright sunshine to this pre teen girl's drab white walls. I'll be watching Lost Boys tonight in your honor. Take care of yourself, and dream a little dream for me.
