RECAP!!!!
Diversity can be a touchy subject in this country. Some people hear "diversity" and immediately think of race, racism, and the p.c. police. But the Princeton dictionary defines diversity as "noticeable heterogeneity" and uses as its example, "a diversity of possibilities."
During the recent election we've heard a lot about racism, but diversity isn't just about race. As the dictionary points out, it's about differences. Sometimes, many times, differences are good. For example, many corporations are embracing diversity recruiting plans, not just because it's the right thing to do, but because diversity in the workplace leads to diverse ideas. A business can't succeed if everyone thinks alike. Neither can our country.
We need to hear ideas from everyone in our schools, our communities, our businesses, and our government to hear the best ideas. People of different colors, cultures, and geographical areas make this country what it is. Diversity makes us special.
After the topic came up recently on the Silicon Valley Moms and 50 Something Moms blogs, we decided to revisit diversity as a group. So today, all of the bloggers from the Silicon Valley, Los Angeles, Chicago, D.C. Metro, Deep South, New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Rocky Mountain, and 50 Something Moms blogs will be writing about diversity and how it affects us and our families.
I'm hopeful that one day "diversity" won't immediately bring race or culture to mind. I hope that during my boys' lifetime "diversity" will become more about possibilities than differences. That can only happen if we embrace our differences and discuss diversity openly and without judgment or fear of censure.
